The Soria refuge
Treat yourself to a break at an altitude of 1840m (6037 feet), enjoy unspoilt nature around you, delve into the heart of the Alpi Marittime in the Valle Gesso, at the foot of the Gelas massif.
A two hours walk from San Giacomo di Entraque will bring you strait up to our little spot in paradise. Whether you come with your family, partner or friends, you will relish a unique experience in the stark simplicity of the Soria refuge.
Come and stay in a 20 bed dormitory or one of our 7 smaller bedrooms with more privacy, enjoy a hot shower and taste our traditional Italian cuisine. Relax on our panoramic terrace. Wind down and listen to the silence around you.
History
The Soria-Ellena refuge ows its name to two mountaineers, Edoardo Soria and Giani Ellena, who were very active in the Valle Gesso mountains from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. They opened up new routes to the Mount Corno Stella.
Jews from all over Europe during WWII were sent to camps in various locations in the South of France, among which the camp in Saint Martin Vésubie.
After 8th September 1943, many of them sought asylum in Italy, and embarked into a hazardous journey across the Alpi Marritime to the towns of Entracque and Valdieri.
Several recovered freedom with the help of the inhabitants of the valley, whereas others were intened at the Borgo San Dalmazzo concentration camps, from which 328 unfortunates were deported to Auschwitz.
Our Philosophy
Eco-responsibility is an everyday challenge as we strive to limit the impacts of managing the refuge, so as to carry on living in harmony with the nature around us.
The objective of the coming years is to minimize our environmental footprint, and become more self-sustainability for energy production. Power is currently provided by a small hydropower turbine and smal-scale wind power is under study for extending power into the winter period.
Practical information
Open non-stop from 15th June to 15th September. Outside these dates please contact us.
By car: from Borgo San Dalmazzo follow provincial Road 22 and fllow the signs to Entracque. At the first junction after the roundabout, take the road than climbs towards San Giacomo di Entracque and carry on up to the final car park.
On foot: from Giacomo di Entracque 1210 m (3970 feet) a broad trail immersed into a fantastic beech forest will bring you up to the “piazzale dei cannoni” on a terrace. Then carry on along a few hairpin turns up to the refuge. This is a 7 km (4½ mile) long walk with a 630 m (2070 foot) ascending elevation.
Help us improve our service. We are in the mountains and try and provide you all we can, but we need you to help us organize your stay as best as we can. Please let us know about any allergies or intollerances so that wa can plan accordingly. Warn us if your pet will come with you, and tell us about your preferences for the bed.
